The Medical College of Wisconsin Endocrine Surgery Fellowship is a one-year, multidisciplinary clinical fellowship. We seek to train BE/BC general surgeons in disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Objectives of the fellowship are to provide advanced training and research opportunities within the field of Endocrine Surgery. Graduating fellows are expected to understand the multidisciplinary approach to endocrine tumors and disorders, including evaluation and management, operative approach, and follow-up.
The fellowship is a collaborative program between Endocrine Surgery (Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology) and Head and Neck Surgery (Department of Otolaryngology). The fellow will spend 7-8 months working with the Endocrine Surgery faculty and 2 months working with the Head and Neck Surgery faculty. The remainder of the fellowship will be spent with participating faculty in Endocrinology and Radiology.
The fellow will perform 150-200 major surgical endocrine cases during the period of surgical training. Cases include, but are not limited to, thyroidectomy and cervical lymph node dissection, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy, reoperative surgery of the neck, and open and laparoscopic adrenalectomy (retroperitoneal and transabdominal approaches). Fellows will also have the opportunity to perform and become proficient in FNA and fiberoptic laryngoscopy.
In addition to departmental and institutional conferences, the fellow will participate in the weekly Endocrine Surgery research meeting, biweekly Endocrine Surgery core curriculum, and will have exposure to the principles of conducting clinical research, scientific communications, surgical education, research ethics and management.
