Golden Cane Faculty Teaching Award - 2012

In recognition of the teaching efforts of faculty, the Golden Cane Faculty Teaching Award is presented each year to an outstanding faculty teacher, as selected by the medical students.  With the highest number of votes, the winner of the Golden Cane this year was John Aiken, MD, in the Division of Pediatric Surgery.  Dr. Aiken was presented with the Golden Cane at the June 23 Eberbach banquet.  Dr. Aiken serves as the site director for the junior and senior medical students rotating through the Pediatric Surgery service.

Dr. Aiken joined the MCW faculty in 1993 and has been a strong advocate for medical student education.  His commitment and dedication is supported by these recent comments from students:  "Dr. Aiken is an amazing teacher and student advocate.  He spent a great deal of time ensuring that we took away everything we wanted from the rotation.  His lectures were fantastic and very applicable. He was able to teach effectively and it was clear that we were a high priority to him.  He has been the most invested and involved site director I have seen my entire M3 year. Further, he is probably the best faculty I have worked with all year in terms of his ability to embrace teaching moments, take time for student questions, probe student knowledge and encourage further learning in a non-threatening fashion.  Altogether, Dr. Aiken has been incredible and I hope to work with him again in the future."

Dr. Aiken is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  He completed his surgical training at the Massachusetts General Hospital which included two years of dedicated research at Children’s Hospital in Boston.  His pediatric surgery fellowship was completed at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati.  Dr. Aiken is currently Section Chief of General Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.  Dr. Aiken is a repeat winner of the Golden Cane Award having received this prestigious award in 2002 and again in 2009.

Other nominees in 2012 deserve recognition for their efforts in teaching the medical students.  They include Drs. Hossein Almassi, Joseph Battista, Karen Brasel, Panna Codner, Christopher Fox, George Haasler, Lyle Henry, Jeremy Juern, Dean Klinger, Peter Rossi, Allan Roza, Gary Seabrook, Craig Siverhus, Susan Tsai, and Travis Webb.
