Web Editorial Guidelines

These guidelines can be found on MCW's Web Services intranet site:

  • Web Editorial, Design and Content Best Practice Guidelines for all MCW Web pages.
  • Privacy and Terms of Use document, approved by the Office of General Counsel.
  • Web Publishing Policies approved by the Web Council governing maintenance and use of Web production software.

The purpose of these guidelines is to offer Medical College of Wisconsin Web producers and authors a set of guidelines to use when creating Web pages with the goal of making their Web content easy to understand. This is an evolving set of guidelines covering situations and usages that occur most often on our Web site. These guidelines will help give our Web pages a style continuity that serves our viewers.

Editorial style is the glue that holds a Web site’s design together. Its aim is to increase the clarity and accuracy of Web content and make it easier for people to find information.

Feedback obtained during a six-month usability study indicates important objectives for the MCW's Web pages:

  • Every page’s content should be written to a specific, identified, constituent-audience(s).
  • Every page must have simple and consistent navigation labeling that makes content easy to find.
  • Every page should address specific, identified, constituent-audience needs.
  • Every page should have a call to action that a visitor can respond to.
