$1.02 million grant for spinal cord injury research

April 24, 2014 College News - Researchers in the Department of Neurosurgery have been awarded a four-year, $1.02 million grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research and Development Division to study diffusion MRI imaging as a method to prognosticate function in spinal cord injury patients.

This award represents a renewal of a previous $450,000 exploratory grant from the VA to the same group to explore the viability of diffusion MRI imaging in spinal cord injury.

The proposed research seeks to validate new imaging-based tools that would help physicians better and more accurately predict the return of neurological function in patients with spinal cord injury. Dr. Shekar Kurpad, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, is principal investigator for the study team. Key members of this team include Dr. Matthew Budde, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, and Dr. Brian Schmit, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University
