Registration now open for Ridin’ for Research Spin-a-thon Cancer Center benefit

Jan. 21, 2014 College News - Indoor cycling (“spinning”) enthusiasts can now register for the 14th annual Ridin’ for Research fundraiser, which will take place Sunday, March 2, at the Rite-Hite Family YMCA in Brown Deer.  Interested people are encouraged to register soon because this popular event, which benefits the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, often sells out.  Registration can be completed online.

The event gathers more than 100 stationary bikes at one location. Riders choose to participate in two or more of the six 50-minute sessions offered.  Registration is $25; however, riders also must commit to raising at least an additional $25 in donations per session. Certified cycling instructors lead this ride event, and participants can cycle at their own comfort level.  Training sessions are offered at various area health clubs in the weeks prior to the event.

The first cycling session will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 9:50 a.m., followed by a 10-minute break.  Subsequent sessions begin on the hour, with the last session starting at 2 p.m.  Each session has a different theme, and speakers will tell how their lives were touched by cancer.  Special lighting adds to the high-energy, high-emotion atmosphere.

Ridin’ for Research was founded by spin instructor, wife and mother, Joanne Dixon, in 2001.  Since then, the event has raised more than $1.1 million for cancer research.

The Rite-Hite Family YMCA is located at 9250 N Green Bay Rd in Brown Deer.
