Marilyn Larson, MBA, named Associate Director of Administration for the MCW Cancer Center
May 01, 2014 College News - Marilyn Larson, MBA, has been named Associate Director of Administration for the MCW Cancer Center by Ming You, MD, PhD, the Joseph F. Heil Professor in Molecular Oncogenesis and Director of the MCW Cancer Center, and Allen Bolton, MPH, MBA, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Operating Officer. She will begin in her new position June 1.
Larson comes to MCW from the Carbone Cancer Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she most recently served as Interim Associate Director of Administration and the Assistant Director of Finance. Carbone has been a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center for over two decades, and Larson was integral to this success, guiding multiple designation renewal processes, building clinical research enterprises, and leading staff in writing the Cancer Center Support Grant.
Larson has 20 years of management experience with faculty, academic staff, classified staff and trainees. In addition to her most recent job, she also served as a Division Administrator for Hematology/Oncology in the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine, a Research Program Manager II, a Research Specialist and a Clinical Research Associate.
She is a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators and the Cancer Center Administrators Forum and has published 10 papers.
“The appointment of Marilyn Larson to Associate Director of Administration is a major recruitment for the MCW Cancer Center and our path to NCI designation,” said Dr. You, who also is Senior Associate Dean for Cancer Research and Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology. “Recruiting someone with such vast experience from one of the nation’s premier comprehensive cancer centers is a game-changer for us. I am thrilled to welcome her and excited about what she brings to our team.
“I also want to thank Brenda Brito for serving as our interim Associate Director of Administration for the last 10 months in addition to continuing in her role as the Cancer Center’s Business Manager,” Dr. You added. “She has led us through many significant events and accomplished a lot in the face of some challenging circumstances. I can’t overstate my appreciation for her hard work and dedication.”
Larson received her MBA from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, and her BA in social work from UW-Madison.
The MCW Cancer Center is currently in the NCI designation process and has recently achieved several major milestones, including a successful visit to the NCI and two external scientific advisory board site visits and reviews.
