MCW global health leaders invited to participate in inaugural Lancet Commission on Global Surgery

Jan. 14, 2014 College News - Stephen Hargarten, MD, Associate Dean for Global Health, Keith Oldham, MD, Professor of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Thomas Sato, MD, Professor of Surgery (Pediatric), and Sarah Greenberg, MD,  General Surgery Resident, have been invited to participate in the inaugural Lancet Commission for Global Surgery.

The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery will meet three times in 2014, with the first meeting taking place at Harvard Medical School later this month. During this landmark meeting, commissioners from around the world will come together to take the first steps in addressing the current state of surgical care in low- and middle-income countries.

The Commission is charged with:

  • Analyzing the current state of surgical care in low-and middle-income countries
  • Delineating necessities for a properly functioning surgical system
  • Identifying metrics for evaluation and actions to take to improve the delivery of surgical care.

This year-long commission process will culminate in a Lancet report in early 2015.

As part of her prestigious Boston Children’s Hospital Paul Farmer Global Surgery Fellowship, Dr. Greenberg is one of the Lancet commissioners and part of the six member core planning team that has been responsible for organizing and coordinating the commission.  Drs. Hargarten, Oldham, and Sato were extended an invitation to join the 1st meeting of the Commission as a few of a select number of participants that they believe have the expertise and dedication that match their mission.

Each year, the pediatric general surgery team led by Dr. Keith Oldham provides training and surgical care in Peru.  This partnership is built on a long-term relationship that several MCW faculty have with the Yantalo Peru Foundation. MCW signed an agreement with the foundation in 2011. Additionally, Dr. Oldham regularly hosts international surgery trainees to campus from such countries as Iraq and Germany.
