Biophysics sponsors First Adriatic Symposium on Biophysical Approaches in Biomedical Studies
June 19, 2014 College News - Balaraman Kalyanaraman, PhD, Chairman and Professor of Biophysics, Harry R. & Angeline E. Quadracci Professor in Parkinson’s Research and Director of the Free Radical Research Center, is co-chairing the First Adriatic Symposium on Biophysical Approaches in Biomedical Studies. The event will be held August 24-29 at the Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences (MedILS) in Split, Croatia.
Topics to be covered include:
Recent advances in selected biophysical methods to study biological systems
Oxidative phenomena involved in the pathology of human diseases
Free radical metabolism and bioenergetic changes in cardiovascular diseases and cancer
Advances in drug, active surfaces and biosensor development.
The organizers expect about 100 attendees, including graduate students and postdocs, from around the world.
Invited speakers from MCW include: James Hyde, PhD, The James S. Hyde Professor of Biophysics and Director of the National Biomedical EPR Center; Jeannette Vasquez Vivar, PhD, Professor of Biophysics and Associate Director of the Redox Biology Program; Witold (Karol) Subczynski, PhD, Professor of Biophysics; Jacek Zielonka, PhD, Research Scientist II in Biophysics; Dr. Kalyanaraman; Ivor Benjamin, MD, Director of the Cardiovascular Center, Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Vice Chair of Translational Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin; Zeljko Bosnjak, PhD, Professor of Anesthesiology; and Jimmy Feix, PhD, Professor of Biophysics.
The meeting is co-chaired by Tadeusz Sarna, PhD, from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, and a Visiting Associate Professor in Biophysics; and Marija Raguz, PhD, a former graduate student in Biophysics and now Assistant Professor at the University of Split, Croatia, and Visiting Associate Professor in Biophysics. Jane Thelaner is the meeting coordinator.
