Bergstrom Automotive continues support of MCW Cancer Center through its Drive for a Cure event

Feb. 25, 2014 College News - Guests of Bergstrom Automotive in Appleton, Wis., had the opportunity this summer to raise money for breast cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin while test driving some unique vehicles. Bergstrom’s annual Drive for a Cure set a record for funds raised in 2013, contributing nearly $56,000 to the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.

“The support from our community and our team members has been incredible,” said John F. Bergstrom, Chairman and CEO of Bergstrom Automotive and a past chairman of the Medical College of Wisconsin Board of Trustees. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer, and people really want to do whatever they can to help find a cure. We thank everyone for their contributions.”

Drive for a Cure, held Aug. 16 and 17, featured a fleet of more than 100 automobiles representing 20 brands from which guests could choose. For every mile driven on a pre-determined route, $1 was donated to MCW.

“At the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, we are motivated to discover more effective therapies for breast cancer, and we are inspired by the countless acts of generosity that lead to the success of an event like Drive for a Cure,” said Ming You, MD, PhD, the Joseph F. Heil Professor in Molecular Oncogenesis, Senior Associate Dean for Cancer Research, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Director of the MCW Cancer Center. “Research will provide us with the best route to a cure.”

Breast cancer remains a significant and deadly health concern in the U.S. The American Cancer Society estimated that more than 232,000 new cases of breast cancer would be diagnosed in women in 2013, including almost 4,500 in Wisconsin. Close to 40,000 women were expected to die from the disease nationally.

Friends and faculty of the Medical College maintain the memory of one woman in particular who recently lost her life to breast cancer after dedicating years of effort to advocacy and helping other women with the disease. Melodie Wilson Oldenburg died in 2009. She was a distinguished television news anchor in Milwaukee and a former trustee of the Medical College. Drive for a Cure is held in her memory.

“The relationship established between Bergstrom Automotive and MCW will kindle innovative breast cancer research, which ultimately will benefit patients and families in Wisconsin communities and beyond,” said Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, Dean of the Medical School and Executive Vice President of MCW.

This was the second year that proceeds from Drive for a Cure supported MCW. Bergstrom Automotive donated more than $50,000 from its 2012 event.

Bergstrom Automotive’s annual Drive for a Cure was held Aug. 16 and 17 at Bergstrom on Victory Lane in Appleton, Wis. In addition to the opportunity to raise money for breast cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin, there was also a raffle that included sports memorabilia from Wisconsin college and professional athletes.
