Annual Global Health Week to increase visibility of faculty global health activities

Nov. 19, 2013 College News - Local, national, and international experts will raise awareness of Milwaukee-based and global partnerships and initiatives during the Medical College of Wisconsin’s third annual Global Health Week, which runs Dec. 2-6.

Events are planned to increase the visibility of our faculty’s global health activities across all four missions of the College as well as raise awareness of local and international partnerships that address health inequities. World AIDS Day, on Dec. 1, anchors the front-end of the week.

“We are pleased to share more than 30 events that promote the diverse communities our faculty and partners are serving to advance health from neighborhoods to nations,” said Stephen Hargarten, MD, MPH, Chairman and Professor of Emergency Medicine and Associate Dean for Global Health. “The event is very much a team effort, with more than 25 MCW departments, centers, offices and student groups, and  community partners such as UW-Milwaukee and Carroll University, who all worked together to make it a success.”

Special to the week is a visit by Martin Cetron, MD, who is Director of Global Migration and Quarantine at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Captain of the U.S. Public Health Service.  His visit will include a special Global Health Pathway Core Session on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m. titled, Emerging Infectious Diseases: Tales from the Crypt. This presentation will be accompanied by a documentary film viewing and discussion of American Heart, which documents the lives of refugees as they try to navigate the health care system.  The events are co-sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs and Diversity.  Dr. Cetron will also give a Pediatrics Grand Rounds talk on Friday morning entitled, BioMosaic Demography Migration and Health in a Globalized World.

The entire campus community is invited to take part in special activities. On Tuesday, Dec, 2, from 12-1 p.m., the Office of Faculty Affairs and Diversity will co-sponsor a Global Health Quiz Bowl (PDF). Teams of 1-5 people will compete simultaneously to answer global health-themed questions. There are prizes for the winning team members.  Sign up your team by Wednesday, Nov.  27,  12 p.m.

A Global Photography Exhibition (PDF) featuring faculty, staff, and students’ own photos of global landscape, healthcare, and people will be on display outside of the cafeteria throughout the week. Submit a photo you have taken for judging and prizes to by Wednesday, Nov. 27, 12 p.m.
