Ann’s Hope Block Melanoma 5K Run/3K Walk on May 18 to benefit melanoma research

April 28, 2014 College News - The 10th annual Block Melanoma 5K Run and 3K Walk, organized by Ann’s Hope Foundation, will be held Sunday, May 18, at the Milwaukee County Zoo.  This year’s event will include an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most people applying sunscreen at one time.

All of the events are open to the public. Proceeds benefit a project led by Sam T. Hwang, MD, PhD, Chairman and the Thomas J. Russell Family/Milwaukee Community Dermatologists Professor in Dermatology, in collaboration with Brian Volkman, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry, that is helping to understand the role a specific cellular protein, a “chemokine receptor” named CXCR4, plays in the metastasis of melanoma tumors. To date, this organization has donated nearly $300,000 for melanoma research at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.

The 5K run, which begins at 8 a.m., is chip-timed.  A special “Team Cathy Kids' Fun Run” – for children ages nine and under – begins at 8:15 a.m. The Guinness Book of World Records’ sunscreen record attempt will take place at 8:45 a.m., immediately prior to inspirational presentations by melanoma survivors and the 3K walk.

Online registration for the event is open and can be accessed through www.annshope.org. The cost to register is $30 for adults ($35 after April 30 and up to the day of the event) or $22 ($27 after April 30 and up to the day of the event) for youth 17 and younger. This fee includes zoo admission and free parking for the day, food and refreshments at a post-party and a goody bag with sunscreen and other items.

The Milwaukee County Zoo is located at 10001 W Blue Mound Rd in Milwaukee.

Ann’s Hope Foundation has been raising awareness and funding for melanoma research since 2005. Its founders, Anne Frentzel and Ann Harrington, both lost family members to the disease.
