American Medical Association President, Ardis Dee Hoven, MD, to speak at MCW on Jan. 21

Jan. 14, 2014 College News - Ardis Dee Hoven, MD, President of the American Medical Association (AMA), will speak to the Medical College of Wisconsin community on Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 12-1 pm, in the Kerrigan Auditorium.  The subject of her presentation is, Shaping the Future of American Health Care, followed by a question-and-answer session.  Lunch will be provided by MCW’s American Medical Association-Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS) group.

During her presentation, Dr. Hoven will discuss the AMA’s efforts to shape the country’s evolving health care system – including improving implementation of the Affordable Care Act – as well as addressing areas not covered by the law. She also will describe the AMA’s long-term strategic plan – in particular, the quest to foster innovation in medical education.

Dr. Hoven, an internal medicine and infectious disease specialist in Lexington, Kentucky, became the 168th president of the AMA in June 2013. She has been a member of the AMA Board of Trustees since 2005, serving as secretary for 2008–2009, chair for 2010–2011, and immediate past chair for 2011–2012.  Currently, Dr. Hoven serves as the AMA’s Board of Trustees’ representative on the Board of Directors of the National Quality Forum and the Quality Alliance Steering Committee.  She recently concluded service on the COLA board, the National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the AMA-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement.

Dr. Hoven received her undergraduate degree in microbiology and her medical degree from the University of Kentucky.  She completed her internal medicine and infectious disease training at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  Board-certified in internal medicine and infectious disease, Dr. Hoven is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Disease Society of America.  She has been the recipient of many awards, and in 2013, was named one of Modern Healthcare Magazine’s Top 25 Women in Healthcare.
