Community medical education program poster recognized by AAMC

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) selected MCW’s community medical education program poster as one of a record number of submissions featured at the AAMC Annual Meeting held Nov. 2-7 in San Francisco, Calif.

The poster, titled The Development of a Community Medical Education Program: The Journey and the Partners, was selected through a review process led by the AAMC’s Group on Regional Medical Campuses (GRMC). Comprised of leaders from several regional medical education programs nationally, the GRMC promotes regional medical campuses with a significant portion of the medical education program at site(s) geographically distant from the medical school. While operating as integrated units of the accredited medical school, regional medical campuses often have significant local autonomy in developing community relations, community faculty and educational programs that capitalize on the unique attributes of the local institutions and resources.

At the AAMC conference, John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, President and CEO, and Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, Dean of the Medical School and Executive Vice President of the Medical College of Wisconsin, were joined by MCW leaders in presenting innovative features of the community medical education program’s development. The session provided an opportunity for leaders in regional medical education to share and learn more about the latest trends in curriculum, assessment, faculty development and workforce issues.

The community medical education program academic and health system partners were recognized during the poster presentation, and the importance of engaging community partners throughout the development of the program was noted as a key factor contributing to the success of the program’s development to date. Other program features noted in the poster presentation for innovation include use of an immersive, community-based model, aligning medical education with the Triple Aim of health care, use of interprofessional training models and preparing physicians more efficiently with less cost through an accelerated medical education program.

The AAMC Annual Meeting is the premier gathering of leaders in academic medicine. More than 4,000 faculty, students, staff and community leaders attended the 2012 AAMC Annual Meeting to engage in meaningful discussions focused on shaping the future of health care.
