Partners begin countdown as MCW-Green Bay launch date edges nearer

Teams of representatives from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the Green Bay community assembled April 10 for a Countdown-to-Launch retreat to outline the steps remaining before MCW-Green Bay opens its doors to students in the summer of 2015.

Discussions focused primarily on topics pertaining to campus faculty as well as recruitment. Participants discussed the pipeline to medical school and becoming a doctor, faculty development needs, the benefits of being an MCW faculty member, how to teach team-based learning and integrate case-based discussions, teaching in the clinic, communication in bedside rounds, nuances between undergraduate education and medical education, and what it means to be a teaching faculty member.

Retreat organizers noted strong enthusiasm among participants and the community at large amid acknowledgement that much work remains. The collaboration is viewed as strong, while more communication and better understanding of the process and objectives is desired by stakeholders.

Retreat-goers defined key action items to accomplish during the next 14 months and developed a calendar for phased completion. These include more immediate goals, such as defining specific faculty roles, resources and development opportunities; mid-range goals, including the development of interdisciplinary learning opportunities; and longer-range goals, such as educating students and families on medical education and financial aid.

Ensuring a thorough understanding of the medical school curriculum as well as the specific responsibilities and expectations for MCW-Green Bay faculty members remains a critical priority in anticipation of faculty and student recruitment.

A total of 25 MCW faculty and staff participated in the Countdown-to-Launch retreat along with 36 Green Bay area partners, including representatives from:

  • St. Norbert College
  • University of Wisconsin-Green Bay
  • Bellin College
  • Aurora BayCare Medical Center
