Dr. Barthel graduated from the Marquette University School of Medicine in 1970 and completed his Pediatric Residency at the University of Illinois and Psychiatric Residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor - where he also completed his Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship in 1978.
Dr. Barthel received the Teacher of the Year in 1990 and the Anthony Meyer Teaching Awards in 2005 and 2008, all for the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Since 2012, Dr. Barthel has been caring for patients exclusively via a telemedicine practice based at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Offices at the Tosa Center in Wauwatosa. His patients are all at Catalpa Health in Appleton, Wisconsin; a clinic for children and adolescents. Catalpa is a collaborative effort between Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, ThedaCare and Affinity Healthcare Systems in the Fox Valley to provide outpatient pediatric behavioral health services.
His clinical interests are in the autism spectrum disorders, other developmental disabilities and the mental health issues associated with chronic illness in children and adolescents.
