Research Focus: Cancer Metastasis, Tumor Microenvironment, Mucosal Inflammation

PhD: University of Wisconsin, Madison (1996)

Postdoctoral Training: University of California, San Diego

Research Interests
Research in the Dwinell laboratory is focused on determining mechanisms that control cellular movement in the context of inflammation and cancer. Completion of these studies will strengthen our identification of new targets for therapeutic intervention to improve human health. There are currently Michael Dwinell, PhD Laboratorytwo major research directions in the laboratory.

Chemokines in Cancer
These studies are defining the mechanisms underlying cancer progression and metastasis. Human cancer cell lines and murine models are being used to define the molecular events whereby secreted immune molecules called chemokines control cell movement in cancer. To date our work has shown roles for chemokines as a tumor suppressor in colon, breast, and pancreas cancer.

Inflammatory Injury Repair
These studies are investigating the impact of chemokines on maintenance and repair of the mucosal epithelium. Human model intestinal epithelia and transgenic murine models are being used to expand the paradigm that chemokines solely regulate leukocyte cell trafficking. Research from the laboratory show for the first time that a battery of chemokines can regulate mucosal wound healing, epithelial cell adhesion and migration processes necessary for innate immune defense.

Research in the Dwinell laboratory are supported through grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center and philanthropic donations
