Dr. Judy Kersten received her MD from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and completed her Residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Kersten completed a National Institutes of Health Research Fellowship in Cardiovascular Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Diabetes and hyperglycemia are clear contributors to adverse outcomes in patients at risk for myocardial ischemia, but the mechanisms responsible for this action are poorly understood.  The chronic reduction of myocardial oxygen supply, produced by severe coronary artery stenoses leading to coronary occlusion, stimulates growth of collateral vessels that increase blood flow to myocardium at risk for ischemia. Ischemic and anesthetic preconditioning are powerful endogenous mechanisms which protect the myocardium against infarction, independent of alterations in collateral flow.

Dr. Kersten's research focuses upon elucidating the mechanisms that positively and negatively modulate the response of myocardium to ischemia and reperfusion injury. Along with the effects of diabetes and anesthetics on cardioprotective signaling and collateral flow regulation.
