Dr. Zeljko Bosnjak named President-Elect of the FAER Academy of Research Mentors in Anesthesiology

Oct. 31, 2012 College News - Zeljko J. Bosnjak, PhD, Professor of Anesthesiology and Physiology and Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), was named President-Elect of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), Academy of Research Mentors in Anesthesiology during the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual meeting earlier this month.

The FAER Academy of Research Mentors in Anesthesiology is an organization whose main objective is to recognize those individuals who, through their activities as mentors, have significantly contributed to the development and advancement of academic anesthesiologists in the area of research and have promoted the activities of mentoring among others in the specialty increasing academic research and promoting the academic image of Anesthesiology. The academy holds its annual meeting in conjunction with AUA meetings, and the business meeting and workshops are held in conjunction with the ASA annual meeting.

Dr. Bosnjak received his PhD from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1979, joining the ranks of MCW faculty in 1981. He was promoted to Professor of Anesthesiology and Physiology in 1989 and currently serves as Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Bosnjak has served on numerous advisory and editorial boards, committees, councils, and NIH review panels and study sections. He remains a member of many professional societies and is the recipient of various awards including the New Investigator Research Award, B.B. Sankey Anesthesia Advancement Award, Research Career Development Award, ASA Excellence in Research Award, two presidential medals (Northern Star) awarded to him by two late Presidents of Croatia, and the Fellow of the American Heart Association (F.A.H.A.) designation.

To date Dr. Bosnjak has mentored well-over 100 individuals including 18 faculty, 52 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, 15 visiting professors, and 26 medical students and residents.

The NIH has continually funded Dr. Bosnjak since 1981. Currently, he is the principal investigator of an R01; Program Director, Project PI, and Core Director of a Program Project Grant; functions as a co-investigator on several other R01 grants in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Cell Biology; and serves as mentor on a NIH training grant. In addition, he is principal investigator of an Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin endowment-funded study at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
