Zeljko J. Bosnjak, PhD, awarded $600,000 AHW grant
January 4, 2012 - Zeljko J. Bosnjak, PhD, Professor and Vice-Chairman for Research, Department of Anesthesiology, has been awarded a three-year, $600,000 grant from the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin endowment at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The study will examine anesthetic-induced developmental neuroapoptosis by using the human nerve cells derived from the embryonic stem cells.
The purpose of this study is to determine the toxic effect of general anesthetics on human neurons at different stages of development. Children exposed to anesthesia in early life could potentially have a higher incidence of learning disabilities later in life. The aim is to identify the mechanisms of anesthetic toxicity in developing human neurons in order to assure the future safety of general anesthesia for children by mitigating risks or identifying anesthetics that are not toxic for the newborn brain.
