MCW Announces Target Start Dates for Central Wisconsin, Green Bay Medical School Campuses

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) has announced the target start dates for its community medical education programs in Central Wisconsin and Green Bay. The Green Bay program is targeted to welcome its first students in the summer of 2015. The Central Wisconsin program has a targeted start date of the summer of 2016.

John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, president and CEO of MCW, said, “MCW’s Board of Trustees endorsed the recommendation of targeted start dates for both campuses. The Central Wisconsin community medical education program will begin one year after the Green Bay program. The dispersed geography of Central Wisconsin partners merits special attention to detail and careful implementation to ensure the high quality that all of us expect for our medical school.”

In Central Wisconsin, administrative and classroom space will be housed in facilities at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, and Northcentral Technical College in Wausau will share anatomy and simulation space.

Medical students in the Central Wisconsin program will gain clinical experience at hospitals and clinics owned by Ministry Health Care, Marshfield Clinic, Riverview Hospital, and Aspirus. The program will engage faculty members from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, University of Wisconsin-Marathon County, University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County, and Northcentral Technical College.

Academic components of the Green Bay program will be housed at St. Norbert College in DePere (administrative, classroom space and anatomy) and Bellin College in Green Bay (simulation space). Faculty members from University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, St. Norbert College and Bellin College will participate in the program. Clinical rotations will be at Bellin Health, Aurora BayCare Medical Center and Prevea Health, as well as St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay.

Academic and clinical partners in both Green Bay and Central Wisconsin have been working closely with MCW to develop plans for the medical education programs. Current initiatives include:

•           A national search is underway to select Campus Deans for both the Central Wisconsin and Green Bay programs. Deans for the programs are expected to be selected by fall 2013. Campus Deans for both programs are expected to begin by mid- 2014.

•           Community Advisory Boards have been established to provide guidance for the Central Wisconsin and Green Bay medical education programs. Community leaders and representatives from each region’s academic and clinical institutions have been named. In coming weeks, community-at-large representatives will be announced.

•           Educational pipeline programs and interprofessional opportunities are under development in both communities.
