Dr. Jonathon D. Truwit Named Enterprise Chief Medical Officer for Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin

Jonathon D. Truwit, MD, has been named Enterprise Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, and professor of medicine (pulmonary & critical care) with tenure at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

As Enterprise CMO, Dr. Truwit will be responsible for the development, management and implementation of a strategy and vision to improve enterprise quality and safety outcomes across the continuum of care, improve physician alignment and satisfaction, and lead evidence-based programs, practices and activities that deliver results. Additionally, he will provide leadership and expertise for clinical quality and safety, disease management, care coordination, clinical integration and the overall patient experience.

Dr. Truwit is currently a professor of medicine with tenure, chief medical officer and senior associate dean for clinical affairs at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he has held a faculty position since 1989.

Dr. Truwit’s research focuses on the fields of acute lung injury, severe emphysema, and acute pneumonia, and he has received major grants from the National Institute of Health and Department of Defense. He is widely recognized for his teaching and mentoring skills with fellows in pulmonary and critical care, and has taught medical students and nurses since 1989.

Dr. Truwit has served in a number of leadership roles; he is the current chair of the American Association of Medical College’s CMO group. He has served on the American Thoracic Society Board of Directors and as president of the Virginia Thoracic Society. He also served as a board member of the American Lung Association of Virginia. Other professional societies include American College of Chest Physicians and Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Truwit is currently certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and holds subspecialty certifications with the ABIM in Critical Care and Pulmonary. His peers also have selected him to be included in Best Doctors in America annually since 2005.

Dr. Truwit attended Duke University School of Engineering for his undergraduate degree, and earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1983. He completed his internship and residency in the department of medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1986, where he also completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine in 1989. In 2009 he earned an MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. 

Dr. Truwit’s appointment is effective January 13, 2014.
