 Postdoctoral Fellow, Synaptic Plasticity - Gerges Lab

A postdoctoral position is available for an enthusiastic, hard-working individual to develop innovative research programs in the area of synaptic plasticity. The successful candidate will carry out pharmacological and structural-functional studies on recombinant receptors expressed in organotypic hippocampal cultures or in vivo. The laboratory has a strong multidisciplinary vocation. State-of-the-art electrophysiology and imaging technologies will be combined with molecular biology approaches in order to understand how individual molecules contribute to neuronal function.

Applicants should have a good background on molecular biology and/or electrophysiology. Experience in cellular biology techniques and animal handling are also desirable, but extensive training will be provided.

 Postdoctoral Fellow - McCrea Lab

The Department of Neurosurgery and the Neuroscience Research Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) are recruiting for a Postdoctoral Neuroscience Research Fellow to join our diverse group of basic and clinical scientists studying a broad array of neurologic disorders.

Under the direction of Michael McCrea, PhD, ABPP, the Fellow will play a major role in the execution of a large, prospective study on the acute effects and recovery after mild traumatic brain injury. In addition, there will be ample opportunities to collaborate with other basic and applied scientists in the Neuroscience Research Center at MCW, directed by Cecilia Hillard, PhD. The Fellow will also gain access to opportunities for professional development through coordination of educational and dissemination activities. The Fellowship period is for two to three years.

Candidates should have:

  1. A doctoral degree in neuroscience, neuropsychology, or a related field,
  2. demonstrated competency in research design and methods through presentations and publications, and
  3. a strong skill set in computerized data base management, information technology applications, and statistical analysis.

Based on the focus of our major projects, experience in advanced neuroimaging methods (e.g., fMRI, DTI, etc.) is also preferred.

MCW shares a campus with our main teaching hospitals, Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, WI. The Department of Neurosurgery also has close collaborative relationships with the nearby Milwaukee VA Medical Center.

 Postdoctoral Fellow, Molecular Mechanisms of Mechanotransduction and Pain - Stucky Lab

The Stucky laboratory is looking for a postdoctoral fellow with significant molecular biology experience. Valued skills include knowledge and experience with qPCR, microarrays, RNAseq, cloning, and transgenic animal generation. In turn, the postdoctoral fellow will have an opportunity to become an expert in electrophysiology by learning teased fiber recordings, patch clamp recordings, as well as calcium imaging techniques.

Ongoing projects in the lab include mechanisms underlying mechanotransduction in sensory neurons and keratinocytes, inflammatory hypersensitivity, sickle cell disease pain, Crohn’s disease pain and mechanisms of pain in aging. Projects utilize a variety of resources to probe mechanisms of somatosensation, such as conditional transgenic lines, retrograde tracing and optogenetics.

Qualified applicants should have a recently obtained PhD or MD/PhD in neuroscience, molecular biology, immunology, cell biology or physiology. US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required. Interest in writing independent grant applications and prior writing experience is favorable.

 Postdoctoral Fellow, Neuroimaging and Biomechanical Engineering

The Department of Plastic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a postdoctoral position in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and biomechanical engineering. This individual is expected to develop hardware and software for a project comparing biomechanical metrics of motor-task performance with functional brain response as measured by fMRI in both healthy individuals and subjects with peripheral nerve injuries of the hand. Motor-task performance will be measured using a commercially available fiber-optic sensor glove system. The position will be based out of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Center for Imaging Research.

The Center for Imaging Research has state-of-the-art imaging facilities, including two research-dedicated GE 3 T whole-body scanners, a Bruker 9.4 T/30 cm small-animal MRI scanner, an MEG scanner, and a microSPECT/CT. A whole-body GE 7 T human MRI scanner will be delivered early next year.

This position requires an MD or a doctoral degree in an appropriate field of biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, biophysics, medical physics, neuroscience, computer science, or a related science field. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in MR neuroimaging techniques and methodologies, proficiency in MATLAB, and excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience with MATLAB programs Simulink, Stateflow, and xPC Target is preferred but not required. Knowledge of the biomechanics of the hand and fMRI data analysis software (AFNI, FSL, Freesurfer, etc.) is also highly desirable.
