About the Injury Research Center

The Injury Research Center (IRCInjury Research Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin) at the Medical College was established as a comprehensive federally funded injury control research center to address the burden of injury in the Great Lakes Region of the Midwest (WI, MN, IL, IN, MI and OH). The IRC brings together researchers, practitioners, advocates, organizations, and agencies to prevent, treat, and care for injuries. Together we can research, implement, and evaluate effective injury prevention and control strategies to realize the vision of injury prevention as one of the premier public health achievements of the 21st century.

The IRC is unique in that it is housed within a medical college. The Medical College of Wisconsin provides care for injured patients through Level 1 Trauma Centers for children and adults (Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital), at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, and through hospitals and clinics in Southeast Wisconsin. The College has over 1,200 students in its medical student and graduate student educational programs and is a major national research center. Given this unique setting and the collaborations among medicine, public health, and community partners, the IRC effectively informs injury prevention and control through scientific knowledge, clinical practice, preventive interventions, and research translation.

 Mission and Leadership

The Injury Research Center at the Medical College (IRC-MCW) was established in 2001 as a comprehensive, federally funded Injury Research Center to address the Burden of Injury in the Great Lakes Region, also known as Region V. Consisting of 6 states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin), Region V is home to over 50 million people and represents 18% of our nation's population.

Located on the campus of the Medical College of Wisconsin, the IRC-MCW is an interdepartmental collaboration of diverse specialties which contribute to its strength. Through research, education, training and outreach, the IRC works to fulfill its mission of preventing and reducing injury deaths and disabilities while improving care of injured patients in Wisconsin and the Great Lakes Region.

 Injury Research Center Data

The IRC at MCW serves Region V (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio), which has over 51 million people (17% of our nation's population).

Regional Facts
In 2007, residents of Region V experienced over 20,000 injury deaths from unintentional causes (motor vehicles, bicycles, fires, poisonings and falls), 2,900 homicides, and 5,600 suicides. The unintentional poisoning rate more than doubled from 2001 to 2007 (4.38 to 9.46 per 100,000 population).

National Facts
Together, intentional and unintentional injuries account for more deaths of Americans ages 1-24 than all other causes of death combined.

Each year approximately 170,000 Americans die from an injury and over 2 million are hospitalized for their injuries. Many of those who are hospitalized suffer from permanent disabilities.

Wisconsin Facts
Over 3,400 Wisconsin residents die of injuries each year.

Falls and motor vehicle crashes are the most common cause of unintentional injury death and hospitalization in Wisconsin.

Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among kids (age 1-17 years) and young adults (age 18-34 years).

Firearms are the most common cause of intentional injury in Wisconsin, accounting for a majority of both homicides and suicides.
