Several MCW faculty members shared their review comments from recent T32 and T35 applications (both successful and unsuccessful).  From those documents, this tip sheet of Training Grant Dos and Don'ts (pdf) emerged.

NIH T32: NRSA Institutional Research Training Grant

The purpose of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (Parent T32) is to prepare qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program supports predoctoral and postdoctoral research training programs at domestic institutions of higher education with the T32 funding mechanism.

NIH T35: NRSA Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35) to eligible institutions to develop or enhance research training opportunities for predoctoral and postdoctoral level individuals interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical research. Many of the NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this grant mechanism exclusively to support intensive, short-term research training experiences for students in health professional schools during the summer. In addition, the Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant may be used to support other types of predoctoral and postdoctoral training in focused, often emerging scientific areas relevant to the mission of the funding Institute or Center.

Other NIH Training Opportunities

NIH R25: R25 Research Education Grants are used in a wide variety of ways to support the development and/or implementation of creative and innovative programs that promote an appreciation for and interest in biomedical research. The NIH terms the R25 as a “Resource Grant” since this mechanism provides the resources to support programs that relate to categories in one or more areas of education, training, information, technical assistance, coordination and evaluation, as well as to develop ways to disseminate scientific discovery into public health and community applications.
