Safe Schools Healthy Students Lindsay Heights Initiative

Award Amount: $750,000

Project Goals:
The Safe Schools, Healthy Students Lindsay Heights Initiative will:

  • decrease the number of personal and physical safety incidents that were a result of fighting in the Lindsay Heights schools and community;
  • increase school attendance rates in grades K-5; and,
  • increase the number of parents trained in child development including social and emotional skills.

Additionally the initiative will:

  • decrease the number of middle and high school students who do not go to school because they feel unsafe at school or on their way to or from school;
  • decrease the number of student incidents and actions related to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco by the targeted schools; and,
  • increase middle and high school students who report they are looking forward to coming to school.

The Initiative will train youth in Restorative Justice; peer facilitation and mentoring; and utilize Peers with Impact to help decrease violence in the community.

  • Outreach Materials/Events
    • Developed community-level dissemination materials
    • Conducted community outreach through a Peer Jury Community Training on November 10, 2012
    • Conducted community outreach through a Bully Prevention Session at North Division on December 15, 2012
    • Conducted "I am An Informed Parent" information session on gang awareness, restorative practices session, and "Ask the Doctor" sessions
    • Hosted a parent center kickoff attended by over 200 community members
    • Presented at Walnut Way community forum
    • Disseminated project information at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Conference on Restorative Justice Practices
    • Disseminated VPI information during restorative practices training with students and adults from Greendale School District with Channel 12 WISN representatives present
    • Conducted restorative practices training for 46 members of the Parent Coordinator Team and 25 Head Start Policy Council members (Sept 2013)
    • Hosted the Parent/Superintendent Coffee on Anti-Bullying Strategies at North Division engaging 42 members of the Parent Coordinator Team and District Advisory Council (Dec 2013)
    • Conducted community marketing at the Latino Forum (Nov 2013) (180 attendees)
    • Presentation at the Lindsay Heights community update (35 attendees)
    • Presentation at the Milwaukee Public Schools School Board Meeting (Nov 2013) (88 attendees)
    • Shared VPI information at restorative practice training at Washington HS (15 adults, 9 students), MPS Central Office (47 adults), Neighborhood House (10 adults, 12 students), South Division HS (39 adults), and North Division HS (18 adults)
