Ripple Effect Milwaukee (REM): Spreading Peace and Building Communities

Project Goals:  In their first year, Ripple Effect Milwaukee (REM) will utilize their collective experience and expertise to develop a comprehensive peace building curriculum that will be implemented in five Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee (BGCGM) sites and the St. Charles FOCUS program. This curriculum features peer-training-peer components and will  expand to five additional BGCGM sites in the second and third years of funding, for a total of fifteen clubs to deliver the program. Additionally, REM will create youth-led leadership councils and theatrical productions that actively engage the community to reduce and prevent violence.

 Project Dissemination Efforts:
  • Outreach Materials/Events
    • Developed brochures and flyers for marketing and recruitment
    • Created and maintained social media sites for REM
    • Developed a Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee version of the Marquette University Peaceworks Curriculum
    • Developed curriculum for leadership retreat
    • Developed a youth leadership training, Bridge Builders, in partnership with Casa Romero (27 youth participants)
    • Hosted a Juneteenth Day sign making workshop and participated in the Juneteenth Day parade
    • Engaged two youth and one staff to participate in a listening session with the Police Chief on how violence in the community affects youth
    • Hosted the Unite for the Mic event in partnership with Journey House, Milwaukee Public Theatre, and Casa Romero (over 200 attendees)
    • Under the direction of Milwaukee Public Theatre, the REDTs (Ripple Effect Drama Troupe) performed scenes from their original play, "Peace Makers," and song at Unite for the Mic
    • Hosted a resource table and distributed information about REM and other BGCGM programs at an anti-violence community rally in September 2013

    • Presented at the VPI Resource Exchange and Summer of Peace
    • Project partner Vistelar presented on anti-bullying awareness at the April Friends Day event (67 youth participants)
    • Presentation at the 2013 American Public Health Association (APHA) Conference
